I am going to live on my own

When you move out on your own, you’ll need to arrange some of the things you’ll be leaving behind. It might sound complicated, but it’s not. To help you get started, we’ve listed five points below. Have you already packed all your belongings in a box, ready to unpack later? Let’s start with that.

Home contents insurance

Your belongings are valuable. Emotionally, of course, but also financially. Everything that isn’t permanently stored in your room or house is covered by home contents insurance. This insurance covers damage caused by things like fire, water, or theft. While it won’t get your belongings back, it can buy you new memories. So, it’s good to have, and you can arrange it with us.

Liability insurance

It’s also wise to have liability insurance now. This insurance covers any damage you accidentally cause to other people or their property. As long as you’re still a student, you can remain co-insured with your parents for liability until you turn 27. Check if this is the case. In other cases, it’s definitely wise to take out liability insurance yourself. It’s unlikely, but your actions could easily result in someone else suffering hundreds of thousands of euros in damage or more.

Medical expenses and health care allowance

From the age of 18, you must take out your own health insurance. Basic health insurance is mandatory; you can choose to cover additional healthcare costs. Up to a certain income, you can apply for healthcare allowance, a contribution towards the costs. The government offers several allowances you may be eligible for. You can find them on the Tax and Customs Administration’s website.

Rental agreement

Have you read the terms of your lease carefully? Do you know exactly which costs are included in the rent, such as electricity, water, or INTERNET? In a time when it can still be a challenge to find something new, it’s always useful to know the contract duration and the notice period. This prevents you from having to return to your parents’ house or encountering other surprises.

Rent allowance

Don’t forget to check this out: rent allowance. Depending on your income and living situation, this program can be a real boost. It’s a subsidy that makes rent a less significant part of your monthly expenses. You can calculate your eligibility on the Tax and Customs Administration’s website.
