Building
Buildings insurance, also known as home insurance, covers potential damage to your own home. This includes damage caused by storms, burglary, fire, and lightning strikes. Buildings insurance is recommended for anyone who owns a home. For most people, a house is their most valuable possession. If you took out a mortgage before purchasing your home, buildings insurance is even mandatory. This gives your bank or other lender the assurance that you can continue to repay your mortgage loan, even if (serious) damage occurs to your home.
Coverage
Buildings insurance covers any damage to the “structures.” This includes the home and the land on which it stands (the plot), as well as anything permanently attached to it. Think of the toilet, your parquet floor, the kitchen, etc. Outbuildings and garden fences are also covered. Note: foundations and glass are not covered and can often be insured separately. Furthermore, anything that is detached (movable) is considered contents, and you can take out separate contents insurance for that.
